STATEHOUSE (April 13, 2021) – Legislation to improve civic engagement among young Hoosiers is now law, according to State Rep. Elizabeth Rowray (R-Yorktown).

House Enrolled Act 1384, which Rowray supported, requires students to take a semester-long civics education course in grades 6, 7 or 8. Rowray, a former school board member, said young Hoosiers usually take a government class during their senior year of high school, but this legislation is designed to reach students earlier.

"It's never too early for students to start learning about government and their role in our democracy," Rowray said. "The more we educate young Hoosiers, the stronger their sense of community and civic responsibility will be."

This legislation comes out of a recommendation from the Civics Education Task Force lea by Lt. Gov. Suzanne Crouch.
