STATEHOUSE (Nov. 3, 2023) – Nearly $2 million in state funding is in route to LaPorte County and Michigan City to help complete road and bridge projects, according to State Reps. Jim Pressel (R-Rolling Prairie) and Jake Teshka (R-North Liberty).
State funding is available for local projects through the Community Crossings Matching Grant Program, including road and bridge preservation, road reconstruction, intersection improvements and other items. In total, over 180 towns, cities and counties will receive more than $91 million in state matching grants.
"We count on our roads to be safe and functioning, which requires constant upkeep and care," said Pressel, chair of the House Roads and Transportation Committee. "With this program, there is dedicated state funding to help Hoosier communities move ahead with important projects and plan for their future needs."
LaPorte County received $1 million and Michigan City received $998,930 in grant funding.
"Safe and reliable roadways and bridges attract economic development and new jobs to our communities, and raise our overall quality of life," Teshka said. "This state partnership with local governments continues to flourish and make our region a better place."
To qualify for the competitive grant, smaller municipalities provide a 25 percent match in local funds, while larger communities provide a 50 percent match. State law requires 50 percent of the available matching funds be awarded annually to communities within counties with a population of 50,000 or fewer. Since 2016, Community Crossings has awarded more than $1.2 billion to improve local roads and bridges.
