STATEHOUSE (April 10, 2024) – LaPorte County communities can roll forward with road and bridge projects thanks to a recent boost in state funding supported by State Reps. Jim Pressel (R-Rolling Prairie) and Jake Teshka (R-North Liberty).

A total of 252 communities across the state will receive over $207 million through Indiana's Community Crossings Matching Grant Program. Funds can be used for road and bridge preservation, road reconstruction, intersection improvements and other items.

"Not every town or city has the resources to keep up with the constant maintenance of local roads and bridges," said Pressel, chair of the House Roads and Transportation Committee. "By providing communities additional funding to tackle infrastructure projects, we are making sure our roads remain safe and functioning for many years to come."

Area grant recipients include Michigan City ($1.4 million), Pottawattamie ($408,918) and Wanatah ($122,340).

"It's great to see the state and local governments work together to make these necessary improvements to our roadways," Teshka said. "Whether you're going to work or school, the quality of our roads matter. It's great to see Indiana step up once again and help locals stretch their dollars further so that improvements can be made."

To qualify for the competitive grant, smaller municipalities provide a 25 percent match in local funds, while larger communities provide a 50 percent match. State law requires 50 percent of the available matching funds be awarded annually to communities within counties with a population of 50,000 or fewer. Since 2016, Community Crossings has awarded more than $1.6 billion to improve local roads and bridges.
