Reps. Goss-Reaves, Karickhoff: New road funding heads to local communities

STATEHOUSE (March 6, 2025) – Indiana's Community Crossings Matching Grant Program awarded local communities over $4.7 million in state funding for local road and bridge projects, according to State Reps. Lori Goss-Reaves (R-Marion) and Mike Karickhoff (R-Kokomo).

The Community Crossings Matching Grant Program provides local communities funding for road reconstruction, bridge preservation, intersection improvements and other projects. This year, 245 Indiana communities will receive more than $200 million in state matching grants.

"As a community, we depend on safe and accessible roads to connect us to schools, businesses and vital services," Goss-Reaves said. "These grants will provide resources to ensure our roadways can support the needs of our growing communities and maintain safety for all travelers."

Indiana was recently ranked as the best state in the nation for overall road conditions by ConsumerAffairs, noting our low rate of traffic fatalities and quality of roads.

Area grant recipients include:

• Gas City, $1.3 million;
• Grant County, $943,957;
• Jonesboro, $421,305;
• Marion, $1.4 million; and
• Sweetser, $664,150.

Karickhoff said to qualify for funding, smaller municipalities must provide a 25 percent match in local funds, while larger communities must provide a 50 percent match. The state requires 50 percent of available matching funds be awarded annually to communities within counties with a population of 50,000 or less. Since 2016, Community Crossings has awarded more than $2 billion to improve local roads and bridges.

"Local businesses and Hoosiers need reliable roads on a daily basis, and these grants help local governments pay for these improvements," Karickhoff said. "Continued investment in these projects is key to remaining a top state in the country for infrastructure."
