STATEHOUSE (March 10, 2021) – The Indiana House of Representatives recently voted unanimously in support of a resolution co-authored by State Reps. Bruce Borders (R-Jasonville) and Matt Hostettler (R-Patoka) to rename a portion of State Road 67 after Knox County native 1st Lt. Clayton Robert Cullen.

Cullen, a Bicknell native, was a member of the Army's 4th Combat Aviation Brigade, 4th Infantry Division, when he tragically died in a helicopter crash while training on Jan. 20, 2018, at Fort Irwin, California. He was 25.

A 2011 North Knox High School graduate, Cullen was student body president, a National Honor Society member and MVP of the school soccer team. He earned a bachelor's degree in history from Indiana University in 2015, and while there, joined the school's Army ROTC program. After graduating, Cullen enlisted as an active duty officer in the Army, specializing in aviation. During his service, he received awards including the Army Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal and Army Service Ribbon.

"Lt. Cullen left a positive mark on our community and his dedication to serving our state and country won't be forgotten," Borders said. "He had a strong Christian faith that he joyously shared with others, and while it doesn't remove the pain and loss his family and fellow soldiers have experienced, we can take comfort in knowing that Lt. Cullen is with the Lord Jesus Christ in heaven."

This resolution urges the Indiana Department of Transportation to name State Road 67 in Knox County from East Cardinal Road to North Scepter Road the "Lt. Clayton Robert Cullen Memorial Highway."

"Lt. Cullen was an exemplary Hoosier, committed to his family, friends, community and country," Hostettler said. "We're urging the transportation department to honor his memory because of the example he has set for younger generations and the lasting impact he will have for others."

House Concurrent Resolution 19 now moves to the Senate for further consideration. To learn more and watch legislative proceedings online, visit iga.in.gov.
