STATEHOUSE (March 21, 2017) – State Reps. Bob Behning (R-Indianapolis) and Greg Steuerwald (R-Avon) recognized the We the People team from Plainfield High School on Tuesday in the House Chamber for their second place win at the Indiana state finals.
“It’s important for young people to learn about and understand the system of democracy we have in our country,” Behning said. “I’m proud to see Hoosier students interested in government, forming their own opinions and setting the stage to be engaged, informed citizens. These team members demonstrated their success at the state competition, and I wish them luck as they represent our community on the national level.”
We the People, a competition that focuses on civic competence and the application of the Constitution on current issues, allows high school students to compete in mock congressional hearings before a panel of judges as witnesses providing expert testimony on subjects they studied throughout the semester.
“Through their successful work and dedication in learning the history and intricacies of government through We the People, these students have made their school and community extremely proud,” Steuerwald said. “They are truly deserving of this recognition, and we know they will continue to represent Indiana well at the next level of competition.”
The Plainfield High School team will compete as a wild card team in the national competition April 21-24 in Washington, D.C.
