STATEHOUSE (April 10, 2024) – Newton County and local communities can roll forward with road and bridge projects thanks to a recent boost in state funding supported by State Reps. Sharon Negele (R-Attica) and Michael Aylesworth (R-Hebron).
A total of 252 communities across the state will receive over $207 million through Indiana's Community Crossings Matching Grant Program. Funds can be used for road and bridge preservation, road reconstruction, intersection improvements and other items.
"With this funding, smaller communities can tackle larger road projects that otherwise may be difficult to complete on their own," Aylesworth said. "Maintenance is needed to keep our infrastructure safe and it's great to see our area be a direct beneficiary of these state grants."
Area grant recipients include Goodland ($176,040), Morocco ($154,223) and Newton County ($698,043).
"Not all communities have the resources they need to complete projects to keep their roads and bridges safe and functional," Negele said. "With the Community Crossings grants, cities, towns and counties have an opportunity to partner with the state to tackle much-needed repairs and plan for the future. I'm encouraged to see communities in our area participate and I look forward to seeing local residents benefit."
To qualify for the competitive grant, smaller municipalities provide a 25 percent match in local funds, while larger communities provide a 50 percent match. State law requires 50 percent of the available matching funds be awarded annually to communities within counties with a population of 50,000 or fewer. Since 2016, Community Crossings has awarded more than $1.6 billion to improve local roads and bridges.
