STATEHOUSE (April 10, 2024) – Whitley County and local communities can roll forward with road and bridge projects thanks to a recent boost in state funding supported by State Reps. David Abbott (R-Rome City) and Chris Judy (R-Fort Wayne).
A total of 252 communities across the state will receive over $207 million through Indiana's Community Crossings Matching Grant Program. Funds can be used for road and bridge preservation, road reconstruction, intersection improvements and other items.
"It's vital that our roads and bridges are safe and functioning to keep Hoosiers moving," Abbott said. "Community Crossings is a great tool for local communities because it opens the door for additional funding, which allows for critical repairs and improvements to be made faster."
Area grant recipients include and Larwill ($214,908), South Whitley ($1.5 million) and Whitley County (over $1.3 million).
"This successful grant program helps us ensure the safety of the infrastructure now and in the coming years," said State Rep. Chris Judy (R-Fort Wayne). "Ongoing road maintenance is necessary, especially if we want to continue to see new economic opportunities come to our communities."
To qualify for the competitive grant, smaller municipalities provide a 25 percent match in local funds, while larger communities provide a 50 percent match. State law requires 50 percent of the available matching funds be awarded annually to communities within counties with a population of 50,000 or fewer. Since 2016, Community Crossings has awarded more than $1.6 billion to improve local roads and bridges.
