STATEHOUSE (Jan. 29, 2026) – State Rep. Tim Yocum's (R-Clinton) legislation to allow for public input and transparency when it comes to county commissioner districts recently passed the House.
Yocum said House Bill 1342 would simply require commissioners to hold a public meeting to openly discuss how and why these decisions are made, allowing for public comment and input. These meetings would be every 10 years after the census.
"This legislation ensures a more fair and transparent process when it comes to the county commissioner redistricting process," said Yocum, who serves on the House Elections and Apportionment Committee. "It's a step in the right direction for ensuring better representation in county commissioner districts."
Prior to serving in the Indiana House of Representatives, Yocum served as a Vermillion County Commissioner for 10 years and served as the board’s president for four years.
HB 1342 passed out of the House Elections and Apportionment Committee and the full House of Representatives. It will move to the Senate for further consideration.
The legislation marks Yocum's first bill passed out of the House of Representatives since he was sworn in last January.
