STATEHOUSE – State Rep. Heath VanNatter congratulates Northwestern High School student John Tyler Barnes for receiving the Mr. Science Award, presented by Gov. Mitch Daniels on Thursday morning. Barnes was selected by a committee of high school math and science teachers, curriculum experts from the Indiana Department of Education (DOE) and representatives from the governor’s office for his excellence in math and science. He will receive an academic scholarship of $2,000 from McGraw-Hill Education.

“Tyler’s ambition to learn and drive for academic achievement led to this honorary recognition,” said Rep. VanNatter. “It is great to see his hard work paying off and serving as a benchmark for other students around the state.”

Gov. Daniels created the Mr. Math and Science award in 2008 to recognize Indiana’s highest achieving high school talent in math and science. The award was developed with input from the Indiana Science Technology Engineering Mathematics Resource Network, the Hoosier Association of Science Teachers, Inc., the Indiana Council of Teachers of Mathematics, the Science Education Foundation of Indiana, Inc. and the DOE.

All Indiana high school students are eligible to receive the award and can apply online. Nominations from teachers, principals and other school staff members are also accepted. Application criteria includes SAT, ACT and Advanced Placements scores, awards and prizes as well as grades received in math and science courses.

“I am pleased that these awards are being developed to incentivize students to work hard and do well in school,” said Rep. VanNatter. “Education is vital to the prosperity of our state’s future, and it is my hope that more students, in an effort to further their education beyond the K-12 system, will continue to strive for awards like this.”
