STATEHOUSE (Feb. 16, 2018) — Hendricks County residents are gaining experience as interns with State Rep. Jeff Thompson (R-Lizton) and his fellow members of the House of Representatives during the 2018 legislative session.

Kate Schoemer, a Brownsburg High School graduate, is the daughter of Karl Schoemer and Ann Browder. She earned her bachelor’s degree in political science from Purdue University.

Liam Zurcher, a Tri-West High School graduate, is the son of Cory and Susan Zurcher. He is attending Bethel College where he is majoring in applied politics.

As a policy intern, Schoemer analyzes amendments and bills, prepares committee reports for legislators, researches language in Indiana Code and engages in public speaking on the House floor.

As a legislative intern, Zurcher corresponds with constituents through phone calls, letters and emails while also staffing committee hearings and floor proceedings.

Each year, the House of Representatives offers paid internship opportunities to college students, law-school students, graduate students and recent college graduates for the duration of each legislative session.

“Kate and Liam are valuable members of our team who are working hard on behalf of Hoosiers,” Thompson said. “By assisting myself and other representatives during session, interns learn how state government operates and develop civic mindedness. I encourage local students to look into this opportunity to gain valuable work experience, beneficial skills and opportunities to network.”
