STATEHOUSE (Jan. 24, 2024) – State Rep. Lorissa Sweet (R-Wabash) is working to increase election security by offering legislation to eliminate all electronic voting machines and return to hand-marked, hand-counted paper ballots in Indiana elections.
"As I meet and talk with constituents in our area and across our state, election security is top of mind," Sweet said. "Our election process should be held to the highest standard to ensure every vote is counted accurately, and returning to paper ballots could restore voter confidence.”
Sweet said her legislation, known as the Trust and Transparency in Elections Act, would remove all electronic election machines, which includes electronic voting machines, electronic poll books and ballot marking devices. She said her legislation would require Indiana to use hand-marked paper ballots that are designed and made in Indiana, embellished with a distinctive watermark and serialized numerically.
"Hoosiers want to make sure their voices are being heard when casting a ballot," Sweet said. "Returning to hand-counted ballots will return us to the basics of voting and increase public confidence in our system.”
House Bill 1286 has been assigned to the House Elections and Apportionment Committee. Watch session and committees live, and view legislation at iga.in.gov.
