STATEHOUSE (Jan. 17, 2018) — The House Committee on Courts and Criminal Code today supported State Rep. Greg Steuerwald’s (R-Avon) bill that would increase the penalty for drug dealers whose products cause death.

“I’m working to strengthen the law when it comes to sentencing drug dealers,” Steuerwald said. “Prosecutors should be able to bring a higher charge when dealers sell illegal drugs that result in someone’s death.”

House Bill 1359 would allow individuals to be charged with a higher level felony for dealing drugs that result in a death of a drug user. Steuerwald said he is working with the governor’s office on this legislation.

“Drug dealers need to be held accountable for killing Hoosiers,” Steuerwald said.

Steuerwald’s bill can now be heard on the House floor by all members. To learn more about this and other proposals, visit
