Editor’s Note: Please use the following statement issued by State Rep. Greg Steuerwald (R-Avon) in your coverage of Chief Justice Loretta Rush’s State of the Judiciary Address:
“Once again, Chief Justice Rush presented the General Assembly with a moving, thought provoking and encouraging State of the Judiciary address. She began her remarks by highlighting the many judiciary successes of the last year, specifically criminal code reforms. As chair of the House Judiciary Committee, and author of the reform, I was very pleased to hear her praise of the Justice Reinvestment Advisory Council (JRAC).
“I’ve made a concerted effort to author legislation that employs court technology throughout the state of Indiana. In 2015 we made some crucial progress by implementing the first electronic filing programs in Hamilton County and all appellate courts. In just the first six months, nearly 12,000 documents were filed electronically, illustrating the efficiency of this law.
“Providing communities resources to expand problem-solving courts and offender supervision programs is advantageous for Indiana’s judicial system and Hoosiers across the state. The outcomes of these programs will make Indiana safer by reducing the rate of recidivism. I am looking forward to working with JRAC this legislative session and thank Chief Justice Rush for her support and guidance regarding criminal code reforms.”
