STATEHOUSE (May 6, 2025) – State Rep. Hal Slager's (R-Schererville) bipartisan legislation to extend Medicaid coverage for Hoosier children seeking pediatric medical care in surrounding states passed the legislature and was signed into law by the governor.
Slager said House Enrolled Act 1024 ensures Hoosier children living near state lines who need pediatric care still receive in-state Medicaid reimbursement for children's hospitals in neighboring states.
"Chicago is home to three of the best children's hospitals in the country, but without extending these reimbursements, Medicaid-covered children living in our communities would have to travel to Indianapolis for affordable care," Slager said. "This legislation ensures families can remain close to home while receiving quality care without the financial burden."
Slager authored the original law in 2021 ensuring pediatric patients covered by Medicaid in Indiana were receiving proper care in proximity to their home and later extended it in 2023. This extension was set to expire on July 1, 2025, and House Enrolled Act 1024 would again reestablish the reimbursement until July 1, 2027.
