STATEHOUSE – State Representative Rhonda Rhoads (R-Corydon) authored a resolution to honor Principal Nissa Ellett of Heth-Washington Elementary in the House Chamber. Principal Ellett was recognized because she led the school’s fundraiser to provide her students with new shoes, boots and Christmas gifts when she recognized their need.
“It is always an honor to host Hoosier educators in the House,” said Rep. Rhoads. “I am very pleased with Heth-Washington Elementary for their dedication to the academic success of their students and especially thankful for Principal Ellett and her tireless fundraising to provide for her students when she saw a need.”
Principal Nissa Ellett of Heth-Washington Elementary sent out letters to parents and others in the community asking for donations for her students as she saw many of them were in need of new shoes and other necessities. The original goal was to collect $6,000, but a staggering $17,000 was raised to give the students necessities they had gone without.
In addition to this great feat, Heth-Washington was the only elementary school in Indiana to receive a $1,000 grant earlier this year, awarded by the Indiana Commission for Higher Education (CHE). The funds will be used throughout the next school year to assist local college and career programming activities.
“As a retired teacher, I applaud Heth-Washington for receiving this grant and for their creativity, engagement of students and implementing Learn More Indiana materials,” said Rep. Rhoads.
