STATEHOUSE (Dec. 20, 2022) – State Rep. Jim Pressel (R-Rolling Prairie) recently presented a Sagamore of the Wabash award to the La Porte County Historical Society Board of Directors President Bruce Johnson.
Johnson has been an active member with the La Porte County Historical Society Board of Directors for over 35 years, serving the last eight years as its president. Pressel said Johnson also serves as county historian, and has a lengthy list of other community involvements and accomplishments.
"Bruce is an incredibly hard worker who has spent a large part of his life giving back to his community," Pressel said. "We are lucky to have someone so dedicated to serving others and I'm honored to present him with Indiana's top award."
According to Pressel, Johnson is a native of La Porte and was an elementary school teacher for 38 years at South Central Community Schools.
Dating back to the 1940s, the Sagamore of the Wabash award was created by former Gov. Ralph Gates. It is the highest honor the governor can bestow and is presented to distinguished Hoosiers who have made significant contributions to the state of Indiana.
