STATEHOUSE (Nov. 2, 2023) – The Limberlost State Historic Site Visitor Center and Gene Stratton-Porter Cabin will be getting some upgrades with the help of newly approved state funding, according to State Rep. J.D. Prescott (R-Union City).
During the 2023 legislative session, Prescott, voted in support of the funding as part of the new state budget. The State Budget Committee formally approved releasing over $2.8 million on Friday to support repair, rehabilitation and HVAC projects at historic sites across Indiana. As part of the funding, also supported by a $1 million private donation, the Limberlost State Historic Site Visitor Center will be repainted and stained, and windows will be replaced and the HVAC system upgraded at the Gene Stratton-Porter Cabin at Limberlost.
"With the help of this state funding, Hoosiers continue to enjoy and learn from Indiana's historic sites," said Prescott, a member of the House Ways and Means Committee, which is responsible for crafting the state budget. "For those who have yet to visit Limberlost, I encourage you to check it out, especially as Gene Stratton-Porter is one of our state's most famed authors. It's important that we preserve our history and pass along to future generations an appreciation of our heritage."
Located in Geneva, the Limberlost State Historic Site Visitor Center and Gene Stratton-Porter Cabin are open for timed guided tours Wednesday through Sunday, at 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. Self-guided tours of the Limberlost Conservation Area Nature Preserve are open daily, with trail maps available at the visitor center.
