STATEHOUSE (Dec. 22, 2025) – The Indiana Department of Transportation plans to reduce the speed limit on State Road 67 near the Jay School Corp. following ongoing requests and discussions with local officials, according to State Rep. J.D. Prescott (R-Union City).
Prescott said the change will lower the speed limit to 50 mph from the school to the edge of Portland. A school zone speed limit of 35 mph will be active during designated times, and INDOT will install additional signage in the area. Weather and scheduling could affect the timeline, but the work is expected to be completed over the next several months.
"This has been a priority for school staff, law enforcement and families who travel this road each day," Prescott said. "Lowering the speed limit and improving signage will help protect students and drivers, and I'm grateful to INDOT for partnering with us to make progress on this safety concern."
In addition, Prescott said INDOT is reviewing potential safety upgrades at two other locations in the region, including sites in Jay and Delaware counties.
In Randolph County, INDOT plans to place riprap around the bridge carrying SR 227 over Greenville Creek to reduce scour risk and prevent erosion. Prescott said the work is part of a statewide bridge safety initiative and requires right of way access for contractors.
