Rep. Olthoff authors legislation benefiting nonprofits

STATEHOUSE – State Representative Julie Olthoff (R-Crown Point) authored legislation to support nonprofit organizations and provide them more flexibility over their charity events. House Bill (HB) 1435 would allow nonprofits to give away or auction alcoholic beverages as prizes at gaming charity events without obtaining an alcoholic beverage permit. The bill passed out of the House with a vote of 92-6.

“I was pleased to author legislation that will support both the nonprofit organizations in my community and the people who benefit from these fundraisers,” said Rep. Olthoff. “This legislation would remove some of the burdens impacting these organizations and provide them with greater flexibility over their charity events.”

Currently, nonprofit organizations hosting a charity gaming event must obtain a permit to give alcoholic beverages as prizes. HB 1435 would allow nonprofits to auction alcoholic beverages up to four times a year. The bill also maintains that these alcoholic beverages cannot be consumed on the event premises and the winner must be present.

The bill will now go on to the Senate for further debate and discussion.
