STATEHOUSE (Jan. 23, 2024) – The Indiana House of Representatives unanimously advanced State Rep. Sharon Negele's (R-Attica) legislation to improve cancer screenings for those with dense breast tissue, which presents higher cancer risks.
According a study from the University of Florida Health, nearly 50% of women ages 40 to 74 have dense breasts. Breast density is the ratio of connective tissue to fatty tissue in the breast, and denser tissue can make it difficult to identify and diagnose breast cancer.
"We know that women with dense breast tissue are at higher risk for cancer, but these patients aren't always informed of these risks during their mammogram appointment," Negele said. "This means they may not take additional steps needed to detect or prevent disease. We need to do a better job of ensuring women understand the risks associated with dense breast tissue and work with their physicians to determine the best screening and prevention options."
Currently, there is no protocol for physicians to disclose dense breast tissue to mammogram patients or in documentation. Negele's legislation would outline the protocol for mammogram examinations and documentation to ensure dense breast tissue patients are informed of their risks. Negele's legislation would also specify that coverage of breast cancer rehabilitative services and reconstructive surgery include chest wall reconstruction and aesthetic flat closure.
