House bill 1224 improves safety in school zone areas

Rep. Bob Morris (R- Fort Wayne) co-authored House Bill 1224 which pertains to speed zones for all-year schools. This was a bi-partisan bill with both Democrat and Republican authorship.

The bill states that after June 30, 2012, if a school speed zone has been established for a school that operates on a 12 month schedule then there must be a school zone sign indicating that the school is an all-year school in order for the posted speed limit to be valid.

"I am pleased to see the Governor sign this bill, which will increase safety for our students," said Rep. Morris. "This bill is simply about protecting young students and ensuring drivers are aware of their presence."

According to the Department of Education, in 2007, there were 21 all-year schools, or about 1.1% of all schools.
