STATEHOUSE (Aug. 25, 2016) – Elkhart County and six local communities received nearly $4 million in state matching grants this week to improve roads and bridges, according to State Rep. Doug Miller (R-Elkhart).
This year, Miller supported legislation establishing the state’s Community Crossings matching grant fund, which will provide about $160 million to Indiana cities, towns and counties on a 50/50 matching basis.
As a part of the program, Elkhart County received $1 million for road and bridge improvements. In addition, six local communities were awarded grants, including the city of Elkhart ($1 million), Goshen ($1 million), Middlebury ($205,861), Millersburg ($117,200), Nappanee ($105,001) and Wakarusa ($455,265).
“This funding will help fix and maintain our local roads and bridges as they are key to our state and local economies,” Miller said. “A task force is currently working on a long-term solution for our Hoosier infrastructure so we can continue living up to our reputation as the Crossroads of America.”
On Wednesday, INDOT announced 121 Northern Indiana cities, towns and counties were awarded $51 million through the fund. Projects that are eligible for funding through Community Crossings include road resurfacing, bridge rehabilitation, road reconstruction and Americans with Disabilities Act compliance in connection with road projects. Material costs for chip sealing and crack filling operations were also eligible for funds.
