STATEHOUSE – House Speaker Brian Bosma (R-Indianapolis) announced the 2015 interim committee assignments for members of the Indiana House of Representatives. State Representative Wendy McNamara (R-Mount Vernon) was appointed to serve on the Interim Study Committee on Corrections and Criminal Code as well as the Midwestern Higher Education Commission.

“I am honored to have received these appointments,” said Rep. McNamara. “As we continue our work throughout the interim, I’m eager to partner with experts in the field, the public and my colleagues to tackle a number of pressing issues that touch the lives of Hoosiers across the state.”

The Interim Study Committee on Corrections and Criminal Code has been tasked with examining a number of topics including; post-incarceration employment programs, collecting DNA samples from those arrested for a felony, ensuring confidentiality for campus assault advocates and the impact of social media on crime.

The Midwestern Higher Education Commission constitutes an interstate coalition of policymakers, practitioners, researchers and other leaders dedicated to strengthening and supporting higher education in the Midwest.

After each legislative session adjourns, members of the General Assembly continue their work throughout the summer months by serving on interim study committees. Members of each committee are tasked with discussing, debating and conducting in-depth review of the topics assigned to their committees. Additionally, committee members receive public testimony and are able to work out the specifics of potential legislation before it is introduced in the upcoming legislative session.

In June, the Legislative Council met and determined the topics that will be studied this interim. Some of those topics include redistricting reform, public health and Indiana’s agricultural industry to list a few. Most interim committees will start meeting in July with a majority of their work concluded by the end of October. “Interim committees bring together legislators, industry experts and the public in an effort to find common-sense solutions to the issues impacting our state. This collaborative effort and the knowledge it affords are imperative to propel Indiana as a leader both in the Midwest and nationally,” said Speaker Bosma.
