STATEHOUSE – University of Southern Indiana (USI) was recognized today at the Statehouse for bringing home two championships. State Representative Wendy McNamara (R-Mount Vernon) authored two resolutions honoring the USI baseball team as well as track and field runner, Johnnie Guy.
“The University of Southern Indiana is a shining star in our state, and the repeated recognition of their greatness shows that this college houses some of the best and brightest students in our nation,” said Rep. McNamara. “It’s always an honor to recognize students who have worked so diligently towards something and were able to achieve their goal.”
USI’s baseball team, the Screaming Eagles, earned the team’s second-ever NCAA Division II National Championship, the first in 2010. The national title by the baseball team capped off the most successful Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) season in history.
“It’s amazing how hard work, dedication and commitment can really shine through when a team, or individual, is successful,” said Rep. McNamara. “These students are not only fully committed to their academic studies, but have also fully devoted themselves to a team. It takes great discipline to balance both, and you can see just how much USI has prepared their students to flourish.”
Also honored today was Johnnie Guy, a member of USI’s track and field, who brought home an individual championship title when he finished first in the 10,000 meters race at the NCAA Division II National Championship. He was the first USI men’s runner in 16 years to bring home a title and he is the second in USI history to join the GLVC Hall of Fame. Along with his national title, he has also earned multiple All-America awards.
