STATEHOUSE (Feb. 23, 2026) – State Rep. Wendy McNamara's (R-Evansville) bill to prohibit cryptocurrency kiosks in Indiana is going to the governor for consideration as a new law.
McNamara said scammers use these kiosks, which can be found in local grocery stores and gas stations, to trick victims into using them to transfer money.
“These scammers aren’t just taking advantage of loopholes—they’re hunting our seniors and vulnerable neighbors,” McNamara said. “They deliberately confuse, pressure, and terrify people into feeding their life savings into these cryptocurrency kiosk machines designed with zero safeguards. By banning these kiosks, we can confront this exploitation head-on and protect Hoosiers from being easy targets.”
McNamara said her bill would completely ban the use of cryptocurrency kiosks in Indiana and specifies that those who violate the law could be subject to action by the attorney general.
According to the Federal Bureau of Investigations Internet Crime Report, consumers lost more than $246 million in cryptocurrency kiosk scams in 2024.
Evansville Police Department Sgt. Nathan VanCleave testified in support of the bill to the House Fiscal Institutions Committee, noting that these scams are becoming more prevalent in Indiana.
Other states including Illinois, Nebraska and North Dakota have faced similar problems and passed legislation to tackle the issue.
