STATEHOUSE (Dec. 3, 2025) – State Rep. Peggy Mayfield (R-Martinsville) was recently presented with a Legislator of the Year award by the Indiana State Chiropractic Association.
The ISCA said Mayfield received the award for her amendment to Senate Enrolled Act 480 during the 2025 legislative session, which helped reform prior authorization within the chiropractic practice.
"The Indiana State Chiropractic Association is proud to name Rep. Peggy Mayfield as the association's Legislator of the Year. We would like to extend our sincere gratitude to Rep. Mayfield for her leadership and commitment in prior authorization reform within the chiropractic practice," said ISCA Executive Director Jessaca Turner Stults. "This reform empowers chiropractors to provide timely care and ensures patients receive the treatment they need without unnecessary delays. The ISCA is thankful for her leadership and voice for chiropractic professionals at the Statehouse."
Insurance companies use prior authorization to determine if a prescribed procedure, service or medication is medically necessary before it's approved. While intended to reduce unnecessary costs and ensure appropriate care, this process has increasingly become a source of delay and frustration for patients and health care providers. SEA 480 streamlines this process by reducing delays and easing the administrative burden on providers. That includes limiting unnecessary prior authorization requirements on routine and low-risk services like chiropractic care.
"I'm honored to be named Legislator of the Year by the Indiana State Chiropractic Association," Mayfield said. "Reducing the burden of prior authorization helps chiropractors focus on delivering the highest quality care to their patients, and I'm proud of the General Assembly's work to make that possible."
Mayfield's legislative efforts span a variety of subjects. She has previously earned awards for her work on bills in areas of education, economic development, veterans' issues, law enforcement and protection of the unborn.
The ISCA represents the chiropractic profession on state and national levels.
