STATEHOUSE (Jan. 9, 2026) – State Rep. Peggy Mayfield (R-Martinsville) recently introduced legislation to fight property fraud in Indiana.
Mayfield said House Bill 1125 is the first step in strengthening protections for Indiana homeowners by cracking down on false or fraudulent deeds and affidavits to real property, and giving the Indiana attorney general the ability to enforce civil penalties.
"By giving the attorney general clear authority to take action against individuals who try to steal property through fraudulent paperwork, this legislation protects Hoosiers from losing their homes, land and investments to scams or bad actors," Mayfield said. "It promotes transparency and reinforces trust in Indiana's property records system, while sending a strong message that property fraud will not be tolerated."
HB 1125 makes it a deceptive act, enforceable by the Indiana attorney general, for anyone to knowingly record or attempt to record a false or fraudulent deed or affidavit to real property.
HB 1125 was referred to the House Judiciary Committee. If it passes out of committee, it will move to the full House of Representatives for consideration.
