STATEHOUSE- State Representative Peggy Mayfield (R-Martinsville) authored House Bill (HB) 1295. The bill will set in place a correction in reference to the Indiana University School of Public Health which was formerly a department of IU’s medical school. The co-authors of this bill are Rep. Matt Pierce (D-Bloomington), Rep. Eric Koch (R- Bedford), and Rep. Tim Harmon (R-Bourbon).
The bill passed out of the House unanimously .
“By recognizing Indiana University’s School of Public Health as an independent entity we will enable IU to qualify for federal research funds that only a school of public health is eligible,” said Rep. Mayfield. “It is important that legislative language reflects these changes.”
The Indiana University School of Public Health was formerly a department of the university’s medical school. In 2007, the Public School of Health was designated as a separate school.
House Bill 1295 will now move to the Senate for further consideration with sponsorship by Senator Rod Bray (R-Martinsville) and Senator Mark Stoops (D-Bloomington). All bills can be tracked online at www.in.gov/legislative.
