STATEHOUSE (Aug. 7, 2023) – State Rep. Matt Lehman (R-Berne) recently received an appointment to serve on the Interim Study Committee on Commerce and Economic Development.

To prepare for the next legislative session, which kicks off in January, state legislators serve on interim committees throughout the summer and fall to examine policy issues, gather public input and recommend potential legislation. Lehman said the committee is tasked with reviewing several topics, including identifying the risks, challenges and opportunities that developments in artificial intelligence may bring, consumer data privacy and security, and legalization of adult-use cannabis in Indiana as it relates to workforce impacts and teen use.

"These summer study committees provide great opportunities for legislators to dive into complicated issues so that we can make effective policy decisions," Lehman said. "I look forward to serving on the Commerce and Economic Development Committee, and I'm ready to get to work and explore these interesting topics."

Lehman will also serve on the Indiana Semiquincentennial Commission, and as a member of the Legislative State of Emergency Advisory Group and Legislative Council, where he will be the vice chair of the Audit and Financial Reporting Subcommittee. He was also named co-chair of the Legislative Continuity Committee and vice chair of the Oral History Project Advisory Commission.

Members of the public are welcomed to attend and testify at committee hearings, which typically occur at the Statehouse in Indianapolis. Hearings are also livestreamed and archived online at iga.in.gov, where committee calendars and meeting agendas are posted.
