STATEHOUSE (Sept. 21, 2023) – As a member of the Interim Study Committee on Public Health, Behavioral Health and Human Services, State Rep. Cindy Ledbetter (R-Newburgh) is diving into ways Indiana can better address mental illness among Hoosier veterans and first responders.

During the committee's recent meeting at the Statehouse, Ledbetter joined legislators to examine the prevalence and impact of mental illness, including major depression disorder, posttraumatic stress disorder and severe anxiety among veterans and first responders. She said the discussion centered on psilocybin, which is an alternative treatment option for major depressive disorder and learning about the drug’s therapeutic potential.

"It was a valuable experience to learn about new options for supporting mental health for those who serve our local communities and our veterans," Ledbetter said. "It seems fitting that during Suicide Prevention Awareness Month that we take a hard look at solutions for help for those struggling or who are in crisis. Our goal is to dive into these issues and determine what state policy changes are needed."

Dr. Ledbetter, a psychiatric nurse practitioner, said depression affects upwards of 20 percent or more of active-duty military and veterans.

Psilocybin, a psychedelic drug produced by psilocybe mushrooms, remains illegal at the federal level, and some states have decriminalized the possession and use of small amounts, or legalized them for medical or recreational use.

Representatives from the Indiana Department of Veterans Affairs, Mental Health America of Indiana, Indiana Health Group, Indiana Prosecuting Attorneys Council and medical industry provided testimony.

The Interim Study Committee on Public Health, Behavioral Health and Human Services is scheduled to meet again at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 18, in Room 431 at the Statehouse in Indianapolis. The agenda and livestream can be accessed at iga.in.gov.
