STATEHOUSE (Sept. 12, 2023) – State Rep. Joanna King (R-Middlebury) today presented a proposal to rename a section of US-20 in Elkhart County after the late Congresswoman Jackie Walorski during the Interim Study Committee on Roads and Transportation meeting.
King said she would like to rename a section of US-20 between SR 15 and CR 35 in Elkhart County after Walorski, who tragically passed away in a car crash in August 2022 along with several others. The interim study committee is reviewing the proposal, which marks the first step in the road and bridge renaming process.
"Jackie was a dear friend of mine and someone I looked up to during our years together," King said. "She was the epitome of public service and cared about the constituents she represented during her career as a public servant."
Congresswoman Walorski passed away in a car crash along with her District Director Zachery Potts, Communications Director Emma Thomson and the driver of the other vehicle, Edith Schmucker.
Once King's proposal is approved by the interim committee, King said she plans to file a formal resolution for consideration and adoption by the House and Senate during the 2024 legislative session. King said if the resolution clears the General Assembly, the Indiana Department of Transportation could move forward with the road renaming.
