STATEHOUSE (Jan. 9, 2017) – State Rep. Dick Hamm (R-Richmond) was recently presented the Sagamore of the Wabash Award by former State Sen. Allen Paul of Richmond.
The award, issued by Vice President-elect Mike Pence, is one of Indiana’s highest honors and is presented to those who have rendered a distinguished service to the state.
“This distinction from my former colleague and a close friend comes as a pleasant surprise,” Hamm said. “In our 40 years of friendship, we have supported each other not just personally, but professionally; from carrying legislation at the Statehouse to serving the citizens of Wayne County.”
Paul said he wanted to work with the governor’s office to present this award to Hamm before Pence left for Washington, D.C.
“Dick has been involved in civic and political activities for three decades — he fit the criteria to receive this prestigious award,” Paul said. “He works hard and I thought this would bring him joy; he spends a lot of time on this job and I’m proud to give this to him.”
The term “Sagamore” was used by early Native Americans in northeastern United States to describe someone among the tribe to whom the chief would look for wisdom, guidance and advice.
