STATEHOUSE (March 24, 2025) – The Indiana General Assembly recently supported State Rep. Lori Goss-Reaves' (R-Marion) resolution recognizing March 21, 2025, as World Down Syndrome Day.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, approximately 1 in every 775 babies in the United States is born with Down syndrome, making it the most common chromosomal condition. Goss-Reaves said House Concurrent Resolution 28 serves as an opportunity to raise awareness, promote inclusion, and highlight the value of individuals with Down syndrome, ensuring they are supported and given opportunities to reach their full potential.

"I'm proud to stand in support of World Down Syndrome Day, a cause close to my heart," Goss-Reaves said. "As a mother of a precious young man with Down syndrome, I understand firsthand the power of inclusion and the importance of celebrating every individual. With the right support, every person with Down syndrome can lead healthy and fulfilling lives while making meaningful contributions to their families and communities."

World Down Syndrome Day, already acknowledged by the United Nations since 2012, coincides with Friday, March 21, representing the trisomy of the 21st chromosome at the heart of Down syndrome.

World Down Syndrome Day encourages participants from across the world to celebrate the achievements, resilience and aspirations of individuals with Down syndrome. It is a global celebration honoring the people living with Down syndrome, recognizing their unique talents, contributions, and the love they bring to their families and communities.
