Rep. Frye: Working for you year-round

Working for you year-round

Indiana has a part-time legislature, but that does not mean being a state representative is a part-time job. The majority of my work takes place during the summer and fall months when I, along with fellow legislators, conduct research, fact-checks and collaborate on potential legislation by serving on interim study committees.

Interim study committees play a vital role in the legislative process. Lawmakers are assigned to serve on several committees, which consist of both senators and representatives from different regions of the state in order to add a variety of viewpoints to the panel. Members of the General Assembly come from diverse backgrounds and professions, and these committees allow us to use our personal experiences and knowledge to concentrate on specific topics that can lead to sound laws.

Some of the topics to be studied include how to best fund our long-term infrastructure needs, preventing and treating illegal drug use, the possibility of equipping school buses with seatbelts and finding an alternative to the ISTEP test. I will soon receive my committee assignments and will keep you updated on my work throughout the committee process.

Experts and members of the public are encouraged to testify and speak on particular topics during meetings. This input plays an important role in the process and it allows lawmakers to hear the thoughts of Hoosiers on potential legislation. Hoosiers are also welcome to attend these committee meetings as members of the audience. Those who are unable to attend can watch hearings live online by visiting iga.in.gov. This site also provides committee schedules and agendas.

When I am not meeting with my committees, I am back in the district working with members of our community to continue to move Indiana forward. Feel free to contact my office by phone at 317-234-3827 or by email at h67@iga.in.gov to offer ideas and thoughts on current legislation and ideas for the future.
