Tools to help graduates plan for the future
Congratulations to all graduates of the class of 2016! Hard work and dedication from graduating high school students, their teachers, administrators and families deserve recognition.
High school graduates may now be asking themselves, ‘what is the next step?’ Our state offers multiple tools to help our most recent diploma recipients succeed in the next chapter in life, whether that’s furthering their education, joining the workforce, mastering a trade or protecting our country.
High school students wanting to purse a profession as teachers can take advantage of a new scholarship opportunity aimed at helping them pay for college tuition if they commit to teaching for at least five years in Hoosier classrooms. This scholarship helps ensure that we keep teachers in Indiana schools. Earlier this year, my colleagues and I serving in the General Assembly supported the creation of the Next Generation Hoosier Educators Scholarship. Scholarships will begin being issued in the fall of 2017. Each year, a maximum of 200 graduating high school students will be awarded scholarships to receive up to $30,000 over four years for tuition to attend accredited colleges and universities in Indiana. Eligible students must be well-rounded in extracurricular activities while maintaining high grades in academics and top scores on the SAT/ACT.
Another tool to get graduates career ready is www.IndianaCAREERconnect.com. This website helps individuals to explore career options, create resumes, research the job market and learn about free training opportunities.
Protecting our freedom is also an option for one’s future. The U.S. Military provides information on educational benefits, military career options and what to expect while at boot camp at www.todaysmilitary.com. There are a variety of ways to serve our country with five active-duty branches and their respective guard and reserve units.
