Each year, the Indiana House of Representatives provides opportunities to college students and recent graduates to participate in the legislative process at the Statehouse while gaining hands-on experience through paid internships. Currently, there are two students interning with me as they prepare to enter the workforce.
These students are spending the legislative session helping the House Communications and Technology Department and Legislative Operations Department. By working with a press secretary and legislative assistant, they are learning skills to prepare them for full-time employment.
The communications intern is Hunter McGraw from Attica. Hunter is a junior at Purdue University where she studies Agricultural Communications. As a communications intern, Hunter writes press releases, produces audio and video news segments, manages social media, arranges interviews with reporters, photographs events and covers press conferences.
“This internship is an opportunity to learn more about politics, network, meet new challenges and gain experience,” Hunter said.
The legislative intern is Rachel Swartwood from Evansville. Rachel is a recent graduate from IUPUI where she obtained a degree in civic leadership and a minor in human resources and non-profit management. As a legislative intern, Rachel corresponds with constituents through phone calls, letters and email. She also helps staff committee hearings and floor proceedings.
“I applied for this internship because I am passionate about politics and helping people, and this opportunity is a great way to experience both,” Rachel said.
Southeastern Indiana is also proudly represented at the Statehouse by Emily Schebler and Emily Shaw, who are both from Batesville, and Laura Hauersperger and Ashlee Morris from North Vernon. Every intern is essential in helping each representative manage their increased workloads during the legislative session.
Internships have become key in today’s economy. Graduates who gain experience by interning have a much better chance of obtaining full-time employment. In addition to getting a foot in the door with potential employers, internships help students network, establish relationships with mentors, learn new skills and explore their chosen field.
The House of Representatives offers multiple internship opportunities at the start of each year. Recruitment efforts typically begin in the fall.
