To memorialize Sept. 11, 2001, Alan Jackson penned a song titled, “Where Were You When the World Stopped Turning?” Answers to this question vary, but for myself, I vividly remember I was on duty at the fire station when those four planes crashed into the Twin Towers, Pentagon and that lonely field in Pennsylvania, claiming thousands of American lives. Even though 15 years have passed, we are still feeling the effects of that fateful day.
Nearly 3,000 lives were taken in the morning hours of 9/11, including nine Hoosiers who were working in the World Trade Center and at the Pentagon.
Just 16 hours after the collapse of the Twin Towers, 277 Hoosiers stepped foot onto Ground Zero to help in recovery efforts. Doctors, police officers, firefighters, mental health counselors and many more from Indiana bravely helped their fellow Americans.
Hoosiers leaving our peaceful state to serve on the front lines of Ground Zero and to answer the call to fight overseas in response to the terrorists attack on American soil, sent a message that Indiana will always stand up in times of crisis.
This 15th anniversary of the attacks on Sept. 11, 2001, allows us to come together and remember those who lost their lives that day and pay tribute to the many heroes who showed courage when faced with tragedy. This day in history is a reminder that America’s foundation cannot be shaken by acts of aggression or terrorism. No matter how many years separate us from 9/11, we will never forget those acts that spurred our great nation to come together.
