Despite the warm weather we are experiencing, we can expect winter and cold temperatures to eventually arrive in Indiana. Our state offers low-income households financial assistance to keep their utilities connected during the winter months through the Energy Assistance Program.
This program is implemented by the state’s Community Action Agency, which has outreach offices in every county. For the location of each county’s EAP office, visit www.in.gov/ihcda/2329.htm and click on “Community Action Agencies.”
Indiana law protects low-income households that qualify for the Energy Assistance Program from utilities being disconnected through the duration of Indiana’s typically coldest months, Dec. 1 through March 15. Households may qualify if their income does not exceed 150 percent of the federal poverty guidelines, as an example, $36,450 for a four-person household. The household must have an active utility account and the utilities need to be listed in the name of a household resident who is at least 18 years of age.
In addition, both of our local utility providers are lending aid to those in need. Duke Energy customers may be eligible for its Helping Hands Program, which assists those who are struggling with winter electric bills. This program provides Hoosiers with up to $300 toward their electric bill, if the local EAP agency determines they are eligible. Duke Energy offers this program through the generosity of shareholders, employees and fellow customers. Southeastern Indiana REMC is also working closely with the EAP to help warm the homes of customers this winter season. REMC customers having difficulty making ends meet can call the Community Action Program agency for the respective county or the local township trustee. It is great to see our state and local providers working to keep everyone warm this winter. Keep in mind, utility disconnects are not performed on any customer when temperatures drop to 25 degrees or below.
