Indiana is celebrating 200 years of statehood. On Dec. 11, 1816, President James Madison signed a congressional resolution admitting Indiana into the Union as the 19th state. The origin of our state’s name dates back to when settlers first made this territory their home, as it was known as the “The Land of the Indians.”
In celebration of Indiana’s birthday and to tout what our great state offers, each of Indiana’s 92 counties is hosting events throughout the bicentennial year. These events are to not only attract tourists, but for Hoosiers to enjoy and learn about their community’s rich history.
Events include the Aurora Farmers Fair, Whiskey City Festival, Bicentennial 5K Run, Jennings Bicentennial Fashion Show, and Versailles Pumpkin Show along with many parades and festivals. To wrap up the end of the bicentennial year, a torch parade and fireworks will be held at Perfect North Slopes on New Year’s Eve.
The Bicentennial Torch Relay kicks off Sept. 9 in Corydon, and torchbearers will travel 3,200 miles over 80 days touching each of Indiana’s 92 counties. The torch will travel through our area Sept. 16-18. Some local celebrities will be carrying the torch, including Milan ’54 Hoosier basketball star Bobby Plump. Hoosiers can visit the Statehouse to see work by a Switzerland County artist that is currently being displayed as a part of the bicentennial celebration. Donna Weaver’s commemorative medal design was chosen by the Indiana Bicentennial Commission to celebrate Indiana’s 200 years of statehood. Weaver’s design was chosen from nearly 100 submissions, and includes references to farming, medical research, industry and the Indy 500.
