Thanksgiving is a time to come together with friends and family to acknowledge all the blessings we have in our lives. Whether this Thursday is filled with food, football or 5K runs, we must remember the less fortunate in our area. It is important to be thankful for what we have while giving back to those in our community.
Coming together over tables full of home-cooked food is a family tradition. However, some Hoosiers don’t have the means of having a bountiful meal. Many in our community rely on food pantries as their source of daily nutrition. From Osgood to Vevay, there are several areas in Southeastern Indiana where food pantries and hot meals are provided to visitors, and they accept donations and need volunteers. A list of these providers in Indiana can be found by visiting www.foodpantries.org/st/indiana and clicking on the city nearest you.
Local churches and organizations will also accept donations of your time, food and warm clothing during the cold months ahead. I would encourage you to consider volunteering or donating to a food pantry in our area. Another idea is opening up your home this Thanksgiving to someone in your neighborhood or church who might otherwise be alone on Thanksgiving. The smallest act of kindness can make an impact and difference for someone in your community over the holiday.
Thanksgiving always makes me reflect upon the past year. Ask yourself, “What am I thankful for?” For me, I am thankful for my family, friends and my health. I am also thankful for our first responders, public safety officers and military members. These individuals sacrifice their time away from family and friends to ensure our safety.
On this special day of sharing, I want to thank you for allowing me to serve our community. I am grateful for your support and wish you and your family blessings this holiday season.
