The Indiana House of Representatives will reconvene for the 2017 session on Jan. 4. Some of the matters I want to see addressed by the General Assembly is keeping Indiana as one of the best states to do business, having a long-term sustainable plan to fund Hoosier roads, ensuring our state lives within its means when crafting the budget, and supporting our rural and vocational school programs.
Since 2013, Indiana businesses have added 168,000 jobs for Hoosiers, and our unemployment rate is below the national average at 4.2 percent. Currently, we rank number one in the Midwest and number five in the nation for the best place to do business. Our business climate is one of the best in the nation and one of our state’s greatest assets. My goal is to continue to move Indiana forward, which means bolstering our business climate by keeping taxes low and attracting job creators to our state.
Last session, I co-authored a law addressing our short-term road funding needs. This year we need to look long-term at maintaining and improving Indiana’s infrastructure. As a member of the House Committee on Roads and Transportation, I will be open minded in helping find a solution for keeping our state the Crossroads of America, while not weighing down future generations with debt.
The road funding plan will be included in the state’s budget, which the General Assembly crafts every two years. Indiana is one of the few states that has not accrued debt. As a lawmaker, you have entrusted me to be your voice at the Statehouse, and I believe my obligation is to manage your tax dollars responsibly.
While making sound investment choices with the budget, we also need to think about making a good investment in education. We have an excellent vocational program already in place in our area, but we need to continue building upon this program as these students are our future workforce. I remain focused on helping bridge the skills gap and strengthening our workforce through professional vocational training, so that our students are career ready upon graduation.
