STATEHOUSE – Legislation authored by State Representative Randy Frye (R-Greensburg) to create an Indiana Fire Training Academy was signed into law Thursday by Governor Pence. The signing took place in front of firefighters from across the nation at the Fire Department Instructors Conference in Indianapolis.
“As a retired firefighter, having the opportunity to create this academy is one of the greatest honors of my life,” said Rep. Frye. “Having worked in the field, I know how important it is for firefighters, who oftentimes coordinate and work together, to receive the same type of training.”
House Enrolled Act (HEA) 1182 allows the Division of Fire and Building Safety (DFBS) to establish a fire and public safety academy which will provide universal training to firefighters across Indiana.
“Many professions find on the job training useful, but fighting a fire is not the time for such training,” said Rep. Frye. “While this is a public safety bill, designed to decrease the number of civilian fire fatalities, this is also about decreasing injury amongst firefighters and better preparing them for the situations they will encounter. These men and women protect our homes and loved ones, and they deserve to return home each night as well.”
