EDITOR’S NOTE: State Representative Randy Frye (R-Greensburg) issued the following statement in response to the clarification to the Religious Freedom Restoration Act.
STATEHOUSE – “Over the past week, there has been a great deal of misunderstanding regarding the Religious Freedom Restoration Act (RFRA). To me, this legislation was adopted to protect everyone’s religious freedom. It was about establishing a judicial standard of review for cases involving religious freedom when government oversteps its bounds.
“It was clear to me that the misunderstanding became reality, and that in order for us to quell any misconception regarding this legislation, we needed to clarify our intent. That is why I am proud to have supported a clarification today which explicitly states that RFRA does not allow discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity. This sends a message to Hoosiers and non-Hoosiers alike that Indiana is a welcoming place for all, and we will move forward.”
