STATEHOUSE – State Representative Randy Frye (R-Greensburg) authored a bill to provide consistent, high-quality training to firefighters. House Bill (HB) 1182 establishes an Indiana State Fire Academy to ensure firefighters across the state receive the same training. Monday, the bill passed unanimously out of the Senate and will now be sent to the governor’s desk to be signed into law.
Currently, training varies widely across the state for Indiana’s firefighters, and without a set standard, this can hinder cooperation between units.
“Throughout my years in the Legislature, I have been a part of many pieces of legislation. However, I consider the final passage of this bill to be a defining moment in my career,” said Rep. Frye. “Having spent over 20 years as a professional firefighter, I know firsthand the sacrifice that these men and women make on a daily basis. I am humbled to have carried this legislation and make life a little easier for those who have given so much to make our communities safe.”
The academy will be placed under the jurisdiction of the Indiana State Fire Marshal to ensure that all local units receive the same training, devolved by the people with firsthand knowledge of how firefighters should be prepared.
On Monday, Rep. Frye also presented a resolution at the Statehouse honoring 70 Indiana volunteer firefighters for 50 years of dedicated service to their local fire departments.
“These volunteers are raising families, juggling full-time jobs and are actively engaged in their communities, all while serving and protecting their fellow Hoosiers,” said Rep. Frye. “Each of us are not only indebted to their service, but should also be inspired by their spirit.”
