Rep. Frizzell commends academic success at local school STATEHOUSE— State Representative David Frizzell (R-Indianapolis) commended the students of William Henry Burkhart Elementary School for their academic achievements in English/Language Arts. William Henry Burkhart Elementary was recently honored at the Statehouse for having one of the largest percentages of students with high growth in English/Language Arts in the state. The Indiana Growth Model, created by the Indiana Department of Education, measures how much students learn in certain content areas over the span of one year. Students are placed into groups with other peers who share the same ISTEP examination scores in the areas of Mathematics and English/Language Arts. Each student’s individual growth is measured by comparing their advancement on the ISTEP to the advancement of the other students in their peer group. The Growth Model projects each student’s score into 1 of 3 growth percentiles, which are labeled as low, typical or high growth. 60.16 percent of the students at William Henry Burkhart Elementary scored in the high growth percentile. “It is great to see such vast improvements and results in our students,” said Rep. Frizzell. “Education is an important building block and especially at the elementary grade level. It is clear that the students, parents and teachers at William Henry Burkhart Elementary are on the right track.” Currently, the model only measures growth for students in grades 4 through 8 based on their ISTEP scores. It is bringing about a new way for parents and schools to track how their students are fairing academically from year to year. “These students have set the bar at a new high and I am confident that we will continue to see improvement in the coming years,” said Rep. Frizzell. “I am proud of what William Henry Burkhart Elementary has accomplished."
