Note to the Press – State Rep. Michelle Davis (R-Whiteland), vice chair of the House Education Committee, issued the following statement in response to the unprecedented increase in Indiana's third grade literacy rates on the 2024-2025 IREAD assessment, which shows an 87.3% reading proficiency rate – a nearly 5% jump and the largest single-year increase since the assessment began in 2013.
STATEHOUSE (Aug. 14, 2025) – "K-12 education remains a top priority and it's incredible to see this historic increase in Hoosier third graders' reading proficiency. I'm grateful to Secretary Jenner, the Indiana Department of Education, my colleagues on the House Education Committee, Indiana teachers and others for their tremendous work to support Hoosier students, educators and families. This achievement follows legislative efforts to boost reading efficiency, institute a science of reading foundation, assess reading skills earlier and give targeted intervention. My colleagues and I will continue to work in the best interest of Hoosier students and make sure Indiana remains a national leader in education initiatives."
In 2023, the General Assembly passed legislation that established science of reading standards and delivered focused support to Indiana students facing the most significant reading difficulties.
In the most recent National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) rankings, Indiana jumped to sixth in the nation for both fourth and eighth grade reading.
WalletHub recently ranked Indiana eighth in the country for best education environment.
