STATEHOUSE (Feb. 22, 2016) – The Indiana House of Representatives unanimously voted in support of a bill sponsored by State Rep. Casey Cox (R-Fort Wayne) and co-sponsored by State Rep. Chris Judy (R-Fort Wayne), that would help honor veterans who have passed away without any surviving family members.

“All veterans deserve to be respected and honored after their dedication to our country,” Cox said. “I am honored to sponsor this legislation in the House.”

“As a former military member, I know firsthand what these men and women have sacrificed for our freedoms and they deserve the upmost respect and recognition,” Judy said. “Senate Bill 145 would establish a system for providing a proper burial for unclaimed veterans, and it is one final way we can repay and appreciate these heroes.”

Authored by State Sen. Jim Banks (R-Columbia City), SB 145 would allow funeral directors to turn over the unclaimed cremated remains of verified veterans to veterans’ service organizations for the purpose of being placed in a state or national cemetery. It would also allow funeral directors to release information regarding the fallen soldier.
