STATEHOUSE (April 19, 2024) – The Busseron Creek Conservation Project located in West Central Indiana received a $1.9 million state funding boost Friday to help purchase 4,650 acres of land, according to State Rep. Bruce Borders (R-Jasonville).
Borders voted in support of the funding as part of the current state budget and the State Budget Committee voted to release the funds during their meeting Friday at the Statehouse. Borders said the money will be used to provide a 25% state match for the $5.7 million Wildlife and Sport Fishing Restoration federal grant, which will help purchase the land in collaboration with The Conservation Fund.
"The Busseron Creek Watershed is an essential water source for West Central Indiana and a habitat for many rare species," Borders said. "It's great to see the state invest in additional land around this natural jewel and work to ensure its conservation."
The Division of Fish and Wildlife intends to operate and conserve the land. The Busseron Creek Watershed is 252 square miles in size and is located in Clay, Greene, Sullivan and Vigo counties. The Busseron Creek flows in a southwesterly direction to where it meets the Wabash River. Approximately 83% of the watershed is located in Sullivan County. The watershed’s close proximity to Goose Pond Fish & Wildlife Area has served to increase the incidence of rare and unusual migrating bird species.
