STATEHOUSE – State Representative Greg Beumer (R-Modoc) recognized the importance and sustainability of Indiana's hardwood industry with a resolution at the Statehouse. Rep. Beumer was joined in the House Chamber by members of the Indiana Hardwood Lumbermen’s Association.
Hardwoods are the largest component of Indiana’s agricultural economy in terms of jobs, wages and economic impact. The industry employs over 35,000 people, with an additional 86,000 jobs generated in economic sectors supported by the hardwood industry.
“Indiana is certainly known for agriculture, and the hardwood industry has extended that reputation worldwide,” said Rep. Beumer. “As a leading producer of wood office furniture, manufactured homes, wood cabinets and wooden caskets, this industry has sustained businesses, families and rural communities across Indiana for decades.”
Indiana has over 4.7 million acres of forest land, representing 20 percent of our state’s land base. Indiana’s forests are certified as sustainable by both the Sustainable Forestry Initiative and the Forest Stewardship Council, which assures customers worldwide that Indiana’s forests are managed in an environmentally responsible and sustainable manner.
“I am proud to recognize all of the organizations that grow this industry and the economy while protecting Indiana’s forest resources,” said Rep. Beumer. “Union City is home to Frank Miller Lumber, which is a stellar example of this stewardship. I am thankful that they have built their business locally, and I look forward to watching this industry continue to grow and flourish.”
The Indiana Hardwood Lumbermen’s Association has been in operation since 1898.
